Museum to Host Lecture on African-American Soldiers in Dakota Territory

The Dakota Discovery Museum is pleased to announce the May program of the Middle Border Lecture Series to be held Monday, May 21 at 7:00 PM.

Dakota Territory in the 1870s was a rugged area, sparsely populated by a diverse mix of peoples. In August of 1880, three companies of African American soldiers arrived in Dakota Territory and were garrisoned at Fort Hale, Fort Meade and Fort Randall.

Dr. Lilah Morton Pengra, professional anthropologist and amateur historian writes and researches in the fields of anthropology, history and biography. She will present on the history of these soldiers and their unique place in our region’s history.

The Lecture Series is presented every other month and features speakers on topics pertaining to the history, art and culture of the Middle Border region. The program is free to the public and is held at the Dakota Discovery Museum, 1300 McGovern Ave, Mitchell. The Middle Border Lecture Series is made possible in part by a Speakers Bureau grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

13th Annual Aurora County Cancer Fund Lawnmower Poker Run

13th Annual Aurora County Cancer Fund will have a Lawnmower Poker Run on Saturday, June 2, 2012 in Plankinton, SD.
Registration Noon-12:45pm at the Roadhouse Pub
100% of the $15 entry fee benefits the Aurora Co. Cancer Fund

MUST be at least 21 to participate

Lawnmowers, golf carts, bicycles or scooters may be ridden.
A flatbed trailer will be provided for those who need a ride

Food, Fun and Prizes Following the Poker Run- at the Commerce Street Grille

Prizes awarded for the top poker hands
50/50 Raffle winners will be announced after the poker run- (Prize money will be split 50/30/20)

CASA Day

First Circuit CASA providing services in Aurora, Davison, Douglas, Hanson, Hutchinson and McCook counties invites community members to sign up for our CASA DAY which includes the “Greg Wagner Memorial Walk for CASA Kids” and “KlockWerks Poker Run” fundraising events on Saturday, June 2, 2012, beginning at the Hanson High School in Alexandria, SD for the Walk and at KlockWerks for the Poker Run. Participants can register online at www.allsportcentral.com for the Walk or by stopping by the office at 200 E 5^th Avenue, Suite 2 in Mitchell.
CASA DAY, sponsored by First Circuit CASA, benefits abused and neglected children who are in the court system through no fault of their own. Registration is $25 before the event; $35 the day of the event. All participants will receive a complimentary event T-shirt and meal. For those walkers who raise $125 or more, the registration fee is waived.
The Walk, which includes a 1/2 marathon Run, starts at 8:00 AM, with participants' registration beginning at 7:30 AM. Sign up is at the commons area at the High School in Alexandria. Various tents will be set up along the walking/running path where First Aid Station attendants will distribute water and other items to participants and where supporters can observe. The Poker Run starts at 9:00 AM at Klockwerks in Mitchell, with participant registration beginning at 9:30 AM. From 9-5 Run attendees can enjoy Hot Dogs, a Shootout and 2 Dyno Runs for $20. Several businesses have donated prizes for each participant who raises over $150 in pledges.
“Our goal is to increase participation and make community members aware of CASA and what we do,” said Jackie Horton, Executive Director. “With the help of businesses and community support, we anticipate over 250 people and children in attendance this year.”
Following these two events, all participants are invited to a complimentary BBQ lunch on Alexandria's Main Street. The BBQ is catered by CASA volunteers and Legion members will help serve. Non-participants from the community are invited to attend the BBQ for a cost of $5.

Dakota Discovery Museum to Host Regional Author for Book Signing

The Dakota Discovery Museum will host Brookings, SD author Chuck Cecil for a signing and to speak on his book Astride the White Mule on Friday May 18 at 6:30 pm.

South Dakota was a dry state from 1917 to 1935 through state law established before national prohibition went into effect in 1920 and continuing on after it was repealed in 1933. Those 18 years created a colorful and sometimes violent history of hootch, gangsters and bootleggers Chuck Cecil’s most recent book delves into the history and the stories of prohibition in South Dakota and is the only book ever written on that 18-year South Dakota experience.

2012 Annual Cancer Ride Poker Run "Ride for the Cure"

2012 Annual Cancer Ride Poker Run on June 23rd!!
It is time again to “Ride for the Cure”, and help to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life!
This year we are starting and ending our ride at Twin Lakes Resort, Woonsocket, SD!
Sign up for the Cancer Ride starts at 10am and the Poker Run will start at 11:30am SHARP!! And the fee will be $10/person
If you do not have a motorcycle, no problem! Follow along in your car!
There will be exciting door prizes, and a Sandwich and Salad Table available for a free will donation for all before we start the ride at Twin Lakes Resort.
Don’t want to drive back to your house when all is said and done? No problem! Twin Lakes has Cabins available for rent along with a few electrical spots for camping next to the resort. Check out their website for more info & prices: twinlakesrestortsd.com.
There are also free camp grounds that DO NOT include electric or running water hookups just near the boat docks, but they do have fire pits, and offer a lot of space available for tents and campers of all types and also has enclosed bathrooms!

Good Samaritan Society Corsica's will host "Walk of Memories"

Good Samaritan Society –Corsica’s will host “Walk of Memories” on Memorial Day Weekend from May 25-May 29. The centers sidewalks will be lined with American flags. Each flag will bear a name in honor or in memory of that person. Flags may be purchased in honor or in memory of a loved one, or in recognition of servicemen or servicewomen who have served or are serving their country. Red tags will signify donation of $10-$24, white tags are $25-$49, blue tags are $50-$99, and silver tags are $100 or more. The names will also be listed in the front entryway. Geddes Community Center Memorial Day Annual Smorgasbord

Mitchell Outdoor Aquatic Center Will Open for the Season

Mitchell Outdoor Aquatic Center will open for the season on Saturday, May 26^th at 1pm. Seasonal pool passes are available at the Recreation Center until the pool opens and at both throughout the summer. An individual season pass is $60, a family season pass is $120, and a caregiver season pass is $30, scholarships are available if needed. Museum Announces Hours for Upcoming Season

The Dakota Discovery Museum has changed its hours of operation as of May 1.

In May and September, the museum will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closed on Sunday and Wednesday.

During June, July and August, the museum will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., closed on Sunday and Wednesday.

The museum complex includes the six galleries of the Randall Building and four buildings within the Historic Village. The galleries of the Randall Building include the Middle Border History Gallery, the Charles Hargens Studio & Gallery, the Oscar Howe Art Gallery, the Case Dakota Gallery and the Terrace and Gates Changing Galleries. The Historic Village holds the 1886 Italianate Beckwith House, 1885 Territorial School, 1908 Country Church and 1914 Milwaukee Depot.

4th Annual 4 Person Scramble will be at the Valley View Golf Course

4^th Annual 4 Person Scramble will be at the Valley View Golf Course in Freeman, SD on Saturday, June 9, 2012. Museum Hosts Exhibit of Mitchell Camera Club Photography

The Dakota Discovery Museum is hosting an exhibit of the work of the Mitchell Camera Club. The exhibit is showing through Saturday, May 19. A reception will be held Friday, April 20 at 5:30 pm. The reception is free to the public.

The exhibit features seventy different works of photography by the members of the Mitchell Camera Club, including the photo ”mis”-adventures of the frightening Little Bob. The works of the exhibit also feature still life, landscapes, portraits and other styles.

The Dakota Discovery Museum is located on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University, 1300 McGovern Ave. Current museum hours are 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday through Friday and 1 pm to 4 pm on Saturday. The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Hours will change May 1.

2012 Hunter Safety Classes Dates

2012 Hunter Safety Classes Dates will be:

May 10^th, 11^th & 12^th
August 16^th, 17^th & 18^th
September 13^th, 14^th & 15^th

Registration will be held between 5:30-6pm on the Thursday before class. Parents must be present to fill out the permission form. Each class will be held on a Thursday and Friday evening from 6-9pm at the Davison County Fair Grounds Complex and Saturday from 9am-3pm at the Mitchell Trap Club behind the Davison County Fair Grounds Complex. All material equipment are provided free of charge.

A Hunt Safety class is required by those between ages of 12-15 to purchase a hunting license. Eleven can also take the class if their birthday falls on or before December 31^st. a student must complete a minimum of 10 hours of instruction by attending all three days. The classes are provided free of charge and are taught by volunteer instructors.
