Lorde met the real-life “Royal” behind the photo that inspired her hit song and propelled her to stardom.

The New Zealand teen said she saw a 1970s-era photo of George Brett, an MLB Hall of Famer who at the time played for the Kansas City Royals, and it inspired her to write about missing out on the lifestyle of the rich and famous. The photograph, originally published in National Geographic, featured Brett in his Royals jersey surrounded by autograph seekers.

When the teen pop star played Kansas City last month, the team sent her a jersey.

The pair finally met last night in Las Vegas, bringing the story of a chart-topping single and a singer’s rise to fame full circle.
