SHUTDOWN ENTERS DAY 4
The nation is entering day four of a federal government partial shutdown. House Republicans are proposing that the 800,000 furloughed government workers get back pay when the shutdown is over.

OBAMA CANCELS ASIA TRIP
President Barack Obama says he’ll be staying in Washington instead of traveling to Asia next week.

WOMAN IN CAPITOL CAR CHASE WAS ‘DEPRESSED’
The mother of a Connecticut woman who was shot to death by police after trying to breach a barrier at the White House says her daughter had post-partum depression. But the mother tells ABC News that 34-year-old Miriam Carey had “no history of violence.”

COASTAL RESIDENTS PREPARING FOR BAD WEATHER
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami are predicting that Tropical Storm Karen could reach hurricane force by late Friday. The latest reading puts the storm at about 340 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi River.

CHICAGO BURGER IS ‘HOLY’
Some say it’s in poor taste. A Chicago restaurant is serving a burger that’s garnished with an unconsecrated communion wafer and a red wine reduction sauce. Kuma’s Corner says it doesn’t want to offend anyone, and it says the burger has been selling well Jeff Young, who runs the blog Catholic Foodie, says, “It’s in poor taste.”

TURKEYS GONE WILD
Buoyed by what’s been called the most successful wildlife restoration project ever, the once non-existent wild turkeys are eating crops, crashing into cars and even smashing through suburban windows. The unprecedented population spike prompted Maine to expand its turkey-hunting rules, creating a bounty for bird hunters and the state’s estimated 60,000 birds.

BROWNS BEAT BILLS
Brandon Weeden, the Browns QB who was recently benched, came off that bench in last night’s game and led the Cleveland team to their third straight win.

INSTA-AD?
The popular pic-based social media service Instagram says it will start putting ads into people’s photo streams in an effort to become profitable.
