Unprecedented Summer of Disasters Leaves Red Cross in Need

Unprecedented summer of disasters leaves Red Cross in need

This has been an unprecedented summer for disasters. The Dakota Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross has responded to six incidents since July, including flooding in Freeman and Letcher; home explosions in Menno and Mitchell; and home fires in Alexandria and Mitchell. In all, 44 individuals received Red Cross services.

“This is exactly why a Red Cross chapter in the Davison County area is so crucial,” said Jackie Horton, director of the local Red Cross office in Mitchell. “We are so glad we were able to respond and that services were not only rendered, but appreciated. Home fires account for more than 90 percent of disasters we respond to each year. In the past three weeks devastation has been caused by home explosions and fires. Our disaster budget is gone, and it’s only August.”

The Red Cross budget turns over every July and since then, the six major responses have put more than a dent in the disaster budget – they’ve consumed it.

“The damage and disruption to communities and individuals is traumatic, whether it be fire, flood, tornado or some other form of disaster,” Horton said. “When a disaster strikes, those affected need the immediate assistance provided by the Red Cross. We are committed to be there with food, new clothing and shoes, eyeglasses, shelter, and health services, or other assistance needed for recovery.”

The budget for disaster services for fiscal year 2011 is $2,614. As of Aug. 31, the local chapter has spent $3,605. At this time, the local chapter is asking for volunteers and/or donations to help the chapter bring back its budget. If you would like to volunteer your time, services or make a donation, please contact the Dakota Plains Chapter at (605) 996-3087.

“The American Red Cross is able to provide disaster relief because of generous support from the American people,” Horton said. “We aren’t a government entity and we don’t charge for our disaster relief services; your support of the American Red Cross allows us to answer our community’s calls for help today, tomorrow and throughout the year.”
