PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Federal budget cuts are taking a heavy toll on South Dakota’s nonprofits. South Dakota Public Broadcasting, Feeding South Dakota, and the Humanities Council have each lost major federal support, with two seeing their funding eliminated entirely. The fallout includes staff layoffs, canceled grants, and reduced programming, especially in rural areas. SDPB plans to cut a quarter of its workforce, Feeding South Dakota is trimming more than a million meals from its budget, and the Humanities Council has already reduced staff and ended grant programs. Leaders of the organizations are urging donors, volunteers, and state officials to help fill the gap as they await possible federal relief.
