MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A heat advisory is set to go into effect at 11 a.m. for most of the southern half of the KMIT and Kool 98.3 listening areas.
There are two tiers to the advisory. The first includes McCook County and runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bon Homme, Charles Mix, Douglas, Hutchinson, and Turner Counties are all subject to the advisory until 8 p.m. The heat dome is finally breaking this afternoon with cool air pushing from north to south across the region. Davison County (including Mitchell), Hanson, and all counties to the west and north are not included. The area under the advisory has been shifting somewhat throughout the day. Any changes will be updated when they happen.
The heat advisory has been issued as heat index values are expected to push up to 104 degrees this afternoon. Officials warn that conditions could lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for those who are doing any type of strenuous work or activities outdoors. They suggest frequent rest breaks inside with air conditioning or in shaded areas away from direct sunshine.
People are encouraged to drink plenty of water or sports drinks that can help with hydration. Any older relatives or neighbors should be checked on, just in case. Lastly, do not leave children or pets inside the car while running errands. It takes only 10 minutes for the cabin to reach lethal temperatures when unattended.
