MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Mitchell’s Corn Palace has been named an official road trip destination for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Great American Road Trip as part of the America 250 anniversary celebration.

The Great American Road Trip campaign highlights destinations across the country as the U.S. approaches the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

On the road trip website, the Corn Palace is described as a “quirky building covered in murals made from colorful corn,” noting the attraction’s ties to South Dakota’s agricultural heritage and its year-round events and performances.

The Corn Palace’s theme this year is “250 years of America,” with new exterior murals depicting scenes including the Declaration of Independence, the Liberty Bell, Rosie the Riveter, and Uncle Sam, along with images such as the Lewis and Clark expedition, the Wright brothers’ first flight and more. Mayor Jordan Hanson told the Republic he believes “every American … needs to see the Corn Palace” at least once.

The Mitchell landmark joins other nationally recognized stops listed through the campaign, including the Gateway Arch and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
