MITCHELL, SD (MitchellNow) – A bronze bust sculpture of the namesake of Cadwell Park in Mitchell was unveiled to the public Wednesday during a ceremony that took place in between games of doubleheader featuring Mitchell Legion Post 18 and Sioux Falls West.

Tim Smith was the Master of Ceremonies at the event that was well attended despite the hot conditions.

Several of Red’s family members were in attendance, along with the sculptor, Darwin Wolf.

Red Cadwell spearheaded the project of the Cadwell Park Complex in 1968, petitioning the Mitchell Park Board to purchase land in northwest Mitchell and provided an early design for the complex.  Sadly, just 1 day after the resolution was passed by the city to build the complex, Red passed away of a heart attack at the age of 44.

The city of Mitchell along with several service clubs and sports organizations continued the momentum to eventually create the area we know today.

Further improvements at Cadwell Park are also forthcoming.
