MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum says an early investment in radio equipment could save the city significant money in the long run. The department is in the process of upgrading its radio communications system to strengthen coverage in areas where signal issues have persisted.

Thum said the city was recently notified of a discount available for future radio purchases if they are made before the end of the year. “Towards the end of the year this year, we were aware of a substantial savings opportunity with which we could receive a discount on future radio purchases if made before the end of the year,” he said. “What we’re doing today is trying to save money by buying ahead. We can realize $300,000 worth of savings by doing this.”

The Sioux Falls City Council approved the first reading of the measure this week. A final vote is scheduled for early December.

City leaders say the purchase would support ongoing efforts to modernize the police communications network while taking advantage of cost savings that would not be available later.
