MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — South Dakota regulators have approved a permit for a $750 million wind farm that is expected to become the largest in the state.

The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission voted Feb. 12 to grant a construction permit for the Philip Wind Project, a 333-megawatt development planned in Haakon County north of Philip and about 85 miles east of Rapid City.

The commission accepted a joint settlement agreement submitted by PUC staff and Philip Wind Partners LLC, the developer, which outlines requirements the company must follow during construction and operations.

South Dakota is already among the nation’s leaders in wind-generated electricity. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says wind provided 59% of South Dakota’s total in-state electricity generation in 2024 — a larger share than any other state except Iowa.
