MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The South Dakota Department of Health is reporting two new deaths related to influenza, as seasonal totals continue to climb across the state.

Health officials also reported 23 new hospitalizations and 468 additional flu cases in the latest update.

So far this season, South Dakota has recorded 27 flu-related deaths, 940 hospitalizations, and more than 17,000 total cases.

According to the department, most cases of the flu typically resolve within 48 hours with adequate rest and fluids. However, officials continue to stress that the virus can lead to more serious complications, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The Department of Health says routine immunizations remain the most effective way to prevent contracting the flu and reducing the severity of illness.

Health leaders encourage residents to take preventative measures, including staying home when sick and keeping up to date with recommended vaccinations, as flu activity continues statewide.
