South Dakota Senate advances mobile sports betting amendment tied to Deadwood casinos

MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — South Dakota senators on Wednesday passed a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow mobile sports betting statewide, as long as wagers run through Deadwood-licensed casinos.

Senate Joint Resolution 504 passed 23-10, with two senators excused, and now heads to the South Dakota House. If approved by both chambers, the resolution would go to voters at the next general election.

Under the proposal, the Legislature could authorize wagering on sporting events by people located inside or outside Deadwood using a mobile or electronic platform, provided the platform is offered by or in partnership with a licensed casino and its servers are located within Deadwood city limits.

The resolution also directs that 90% of proceeds from taxes on mobile sports wagering be used for property tax relief or to reduce property taxes in South Dakota.

The measure is sponsored by Sen. Casey Crabtree, R-Madison.
