In a Thursday meeting, the board unanimously passed updates covering voter residency requirements and candidate procedures. One major change allows gubernatorial candidates to choose their own running mates instead of leaving the decision to party conventions. Voters who use mail-forwarding services will now be restricted to federal races unless they provide a physical address, while those who sell their homes but plan to return to South Dakota can still vote. The board also updated absentee ballot forms, giving counties more flexibility, though some local auditors voiced concerns about added costs and formatting challenges.
