Sudden Shutdown Silences Four South Dakota Newspapers

MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Four local newspapers in South Dakota shut down overnight, leaving entire communities without a local news source. Journalists in Brookings, Huron, Redfield, and Moody County say they were blindsided by a late-night email from their parent company, News Media Corporation, laying off hundreds across five states. Editors are calling it a failure of corporate leadership, with one saying staff are now wondering how they’ll feed their families. The Brookings Register and others posted emotional farewells, while local leaders say the loss is a major blow to civic life. Efforts to reach the Illinois-based company have been unsuccessful, and media organizations say the closure’s suddenness is unprecedented. For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary." As Berklee College of Music professor and forensic musicologist Joe Bennett notes, the February release is "a fair bit slower than the mean average for the Hot 100, or for a historical song of the summer."
