MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) State health officials are warning residents to take precautions outdoors as West Nile virus cases climb to their highest level since 2018. So far this year, 26 human cases and two deaths have been confirmed in South Dakota, fueled by a wet summer and heavy mosquito activity. Positive mosquito pools have been detected in counties including Minnehaha, Brown, and Brookings. Experts urge people to limit time outside at dawn and dusk or wear long sleeves and pants.
